RAC Ontario Sections Bulletin for March 14, 2020

NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. Visalia International DX Convention, Other Events Cancelled Due to Coronavirus

Concern over COVID-19 has led to the cancellation of the 2020 International DX Convention (IDXC),
which was to be held April 24 – 26 in Visalia, California.

In Scotland, the GMDX Convention, set for April 4, has been postponed until later this year,
but a new date has not yet been announced.

The Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL) has announced the cancellation of several amateur radio events
planned for March, in the wake of a government policy requesting that events be canceled, postponed,
or reduced in size for the immediate future.

Vicenzo Favata, IT9IZY, the president of ARI announced this week that the organization’s headquarters
in Milan has been closed in line with governmental directives. He noted governmental mandates calling
for the suspension of conferences, meetings, and social events while any threat of COVID-19 exists.

Coronavirus concerns also postponed until May 3 a March 8 amateur radio flea market in Iceland, where
some 3 dozen COVID-19 cases have been reported.

FUNK TAG (Radio Day) in Kassel, Germany, organized by the DARC and set for April 18, has been cancelled.
The DARC Board said it was following the recommendation the federal health minister, who advises
avoiding events with more than 1,000 visitors.

Norway’s IARU member-society NRRL postponed its annual general meeting, set for April 19, in line
with government recommendations.

1A . Ohio Bans Mass Gatherings of 100 or More

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced Mar 12, 2020 that Ohio Department of Health Director
Amy Acton, M.D., MPH has signed an order to prohibit mass gatherings in the state of Ohio.

Mass gatherings are defined as any event or convening that brings together 100 or more persons in a
single space at the same time such as an auditorium, stadium, arena, large conference room, meeting hall,
theater, or any other confined indoor or outdoor space.

This order will take effect immediately and will remain until the state of emergency declared by the
Governor has been rescinded or modified.

3. Using Kiwi-SDR for HF direction finding.

Here is an article that explains the "Time Difference of Arrival" technique of direction finding
used by some networked Software Defined Radios that are GPS time synchronized.

4. A 'radio-active' sunspot from the next solar cycle

A new sunspot is emerging in the sun's southern hemisphere.
 Its magnetic polarity identifies it as a member of new Solar Cycle 25.

Although the spot is relatively small, it is also dynamic, and has produced one of the first
loud shortwave radio bursts of the new solar cycle.
