RAC Ontario Sections Bulletin for March 21, 2020

This is V__3____, Official Bulletin Station for Radio Amateurs of Canada, with this week's bulletin

1. RAC Head Office temporarily closed

In order to ensure the health and safety of the RAC staff, volunteers and the amateur radio
community in Ottawa who visit the Head Office, RAC has decided to close its headquarters
effective immediately. As a result, the majority of activities and responsibilities of the
RAC administration will now be performed remotely until the situation improves.
Please do not go the RAC Head Office until you have been informed that it has been reopened.

If you need to renew your RAC membership you can do so by sending a cheque to the address
provided below or by completing the online form at the Membership Sign Up / Renewal Area.
You may also contact the office by telephone to renew your membership if preferred.

Mail will now be picked up at the RAC Head Office intermittently so please take this delay
into account if you are intending to send cheques, forms or applications to the RAC office.
Please allow for extra time and to send correspondence well in advance of any time constraints.

We will continue to assist RAC members by telephone at 613-244-4367 or 877-273-8304
from 10 am to 4 pm EDT, Monday through Friday (except statutory holidays).

The RAC General Manager continues to be available by email at racgm @ rac.ca. In addition, the
regular RAC Headquarters email address at rachq @ rac.ca will also be monitored.

We understand this is an uncertain time for everyone and we are here to continue to support
you and we ask for your patience.
We also stress the importance of listening to medical officials in your own areas and exercise
all due caution with your own activities.

-- Alan Griffin, RAC MarCom Director

2. Hamvention 2020 planned for May 15-17 in Xenia, Ohio is now cancelled

It is with a very heavy heart the Hamvention Executive Committee has decided to cancel
Hamvention for this year. More specific details regarding the closure will soon be posted at
the hamvention website. Thank you for your understanding in this time of International Crisis.
-- Jack Gerbs,  General Chairman HV2020

3. Canceled Ohio ARES State Conference Morphs into Statewide Communication Exercise

Ohio Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) canceled the Ohio ARES State Conference set for
April 4 due to the coronavirus pandemic and repurposed the date for a statewide communication
exercise, with an emphasis on communicating from home.

We turned the day into a 2-hour series of nets designed to have amateur operators
check in using their home stations.

The Ohio HF Emergency Net will take check-ins on 40 and 80 meters (SSB), with the Ohio Digital
Emergency Net (OHDEN) operating on 80 meters. Then, a linked digital radio system will be brought
into play, using DMR’s Ohio talk group linked to the Fusion “Ohio Link” group.
Stations will simply check in; no traffic will be handled. It’s just designed to prove
we can communicate from home, while locked down, and still get the job done.

— Stan Broadway, N8BHL

4. Social Distancing due to Coronavirus? - Why not participate in State or Provincial QSO Party?

Wondering what to do while restricting your outings over the next few weeks?
Why not take part in a QSO Party. They are usually more laid back than the major contests.
The following URL will list upcoming QSO parties and contests that might interest you.
You can always make plans for the Ontario QSO Party - it will happen April 18th Weekend.
"Social Distancing" can be achieved with a microphone and transceiver.
